GTRI created Plasma Applications Research Facility (PARF) in 1989 to develop and test plasma applications to dispose of municipal, industrial and toxic wastes. The PARF, headed by Dr. Louis J. Circeo, became the largest university-based plasma research program in the U.S. In 1997, the U.S. Department of Energy designated the PARF as a National Center of Excellence for Environmental and Engineering Applications of Plasma Arc Technology. The PARF performed several million dollars of research sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Department of Defense.

APAT has rights to the technology and applications created under the direction of Dr. Circeo. These include applications related to plasma treatment of municipal solid wastes at fossil-fuel fired power plants, treatment of contaminated soils, slope stabilization and landfill remediation. The company will conduct continued research to develop intellectual property in the areas of plasma arc technology applications and renewable waste-to-energy conversion technology.
